Yellowhawk Cellar Rosato

Ooohhh - I like this wine!

This 2005 Rosato from Yellowhawk Cellar is the perfect summer wine for red wine drinkers who want a chilled wine during these hot days of summer. "Only white wine" drinkers will enjoy this wine, too (pour it in a dark blue or black glass and they will never know they are drinking a red).

Made with 100% Lemberger, this rosato from Yellowhawk Cellar is dry and crisp in flavor. The color is just gorgeous! A brilliant red strawberry color. The taste has lots of juicy berries showing through, especially strawberry. The rosato has been barrel fermented just enough to smooth and round it out. Lemberger is such a unique grape as it is, so this wine is really special.

I discovered, not only is this rosato a great sipping wine alone or with a cheese plate (I am content with a wedge of Laughing Cow and water crackers), it is a great food wine. So far I have enjoyed the rosato from Yellowhawk Cellar with a taco salad, roasted red pepper hummus spread on Greek flatbread, my favorite potato salad recipe and chicken salad sandwiches. I think this is a great wine for picnics and I would carry it through to Thanksgiving as it will make for a perfect pairing with turkey.

It is also at a perfect price - $10 a bottle. Here's to some great picnics!

This wine sounds rather intriguing! I'm not sure if I'll be able to find it in Tokyo, though. I recently went to an Austrian wine tasting and tried a number of blaufrnakish-based wines - I understand that Lemburger is another name for that grape, yes? - and my impression was that it was darkly agressive. I'd be really curious to see how it fares as a rose.

Anyway, I just joined the Blogs by Women network, and this is the first time for me to see your blog, but it looks really interesting, and I'll definitely be back!

Hi Melinda,
I checked out your blog. It's a great food/wine blog with beautiful photography.
Yes, you are correct. Lemberger is another name for blaufrankisch. Lemberger is one of my favorite grapes. It isn't as aggressive as Cabernet Sauvignon, but a bit more fruit forward. If you want more info on Lemberger check out:

Thanks!

Thanks for your comments about my blog! I don't have any formal training in food, wine, sake, or photography, so I'm very flattered.

I've never met such a big Lemberger fan (my apologies for spelling boo-boos, the fingers just get typing and all...), but you've really piqued my interest. Looking forward to talking with you more about what you're drinking, and I'll let you know what's happening here in Nihon! You wouldn't happen to also love sake, would you?

I love you're sneaky coloured glass idea. I'm forever trying to get people to overcome wine predjudices. I'll try that for the rose-o-phobics in my life!

I picked up a bottle of this at the Metropolitan Market in Seattle and found it very yummy. I have been drinking a lot of roses this summer and this is one of the better wines. Thanks for posting information about the grape. I did not realize it was made from Lemberger.

BTW great blog. I found your blog recently planning for a trip to Walla Walla.
